People often hear about viruses and many different types for example trojan viruses, malware, spyware, ransomware the media tends to also focus on it. So, what exactly are Viruses and Antivirus, why do I need one and what one should I use. These questions get asked often as it’s not really explained by the media or to people who just use computers for everyday use.
What is a Virus?
A virus is some sort of program that does something the user would not want it to do, most of the time it does this while the user is unaware of what is going on. It tends to run out of the user’s sight and as there are so many types that do different things not all are easy to realize are there. Often viruses are made with the intent to cause havoc on the device mainly for monetary gain but sometimes to either prove a point or what the person would call fun. Not all viruses will destroy your computer in the ways stated on the news or seen in movies. Some just sit there and take a copy of every word or number you type in, some just create files that spread just to slow your computer down. Malware is basically the same as Viruses but tend to on a deeper so are harder to detect but overall, they are the same.
What is Antivirus?
An Antivirus is a simple program that you install to protect yourself, the program scans your computer for threats and will clean them up for you either before they cause harm or while in the process depending on what type. Each program will have different features ranging from real time protection to cloud based protection, most have tools to try and help in some way, shape or form but not all do the job to an adequate standard. They all try their best but not all care about the customer. Some only care about money compared to the user.
Why do I need one?
An Antivirus is and tends to be your only line of defense, they make sure you do not get viruses which could make you lose data or force you to pay large amounts of money to get your files back. Antivirus checks and makes sure nothing malicious gets its way into your computer to disrupt your work, get personal information or use your computer to do nasty stuff.
What Antivirus should I use?
With there being so many Antiviruses out there it’s a tough call on what one you should get, should you get one that is free or the most expensive one, should you get one that a friend suggested or what.
